Thread: Merchants & Marauders:: Rules:: How to place again into the game the special weapons

I received this wonderfull game a few weeks ago and i am trully enjoining it. Rules needs a time although most are clear. Nevertheless i still have a doubt.

At the begining of the game i should place ship modification and special weapons randomlly into the map. Games goes on and some of them has been purchased so there are ports empty of this for sale. How are they coming back to the game? Are they gone forever sonthe first to catch them is the lucky one?

Maybe it is too basic question but it is still not clear for me.

Thanks all!

Thread: Merchants & Marauders:: Rules:: "Slave Galleon" Rumor: Two Glory Points or Just One?

Hi,

I searched for my question before posting, and couldn't find this specific question:

So I understand the Slave Galleon rumor throws me directly into crew combat versus the naval ship. Assuming I succeed, I get to keep the Galleon (or get 15 gold if I don't have any bounties) and thus successfully complete the rumor. Completion of the rumor would earn me a glory point.

Assuming I kept the Galleon, does that mean I get ANOTHER glory point since I essentially killed the slave galleon captain and took over their ship?

Thread: Merchants & Marauders:: Rules:: Does a brown NPC ship ever attack a black NPC pirate or vice versa?

by singler3360

Searched but could not find:

I'm trying to learn M&M by playing the solo variant that starts out with two brown NPC ships and one black NPC pirate ship. The first event card indicated movement of one of the brown NPC ships but since it was adjacent to the black NPC pirate ship, should it move into its sea zone and initiate an attack? Is this true in a multiplayer game as well? Or do brown NPC ships never initiate an attack?

What if a black NPC pirate ship needs to move in a direction but is in the same situation?

Thanks!

Probably not a big deal, but when you remove a good in demand token from the board and replace it with one of the face down ones from the pool. Do you put the removed good into the pool right away, or wait until it's empty you need to "reshuffle" them.

Does it even matter?

If at the beginning of a turn there are 8 merchant tokens in the merchant track, redistribute them to the sea zones

Should this read "more than 8?"

The difference being that they don't refresh until after everyone has gone... or if player 1 removes the 8th, do they redistribute for player 2.

It appears the definition of turn is event card and player actions which would support "more than 8"

Thanks.

Thread: Merchants & Marauders:: Rules:: What happens to NPC ships that flee? Do they stay to be scouted for again or vanish? (rules flaw?)

I recently had a rather silly set of events happen. To win the game my son went pirate hunting. He found one and had a better ship but the pirate did a little damage, got damaged more and fled. My son then scouted for it successfully twice more as presumably it stayed in the same sea zone but between combat it healed up completely (as stated in the rules p. 13) while he kept getting more and more damaged.

Has this happens to other people? How would you suggest we deal with it?

I suggest that NPC ships should only heal up completely between turns...

I have a few questions regarding Naval Ships 2nd Hunt Priority

2) Player Captains that have bounties from other nations.

a) OK... What if I have a Dutch Bounty, The Spanish and Dutch are at war, and it's a Spanish Naval Ship moving?

b) Will a Naval Ship from my own nationality hunt me if I have a bounty of another nation?

I assume yes on b) because it keeps the game simple and I'm giving the nationality a bad name.

Machiel van Riebeeck has the ability "negate a hit from pirate cannon-fire once per battle". I assume that battle is the whole battle with the opponent. So effectively you only get to dodge 1 point of damage?

Fog says "You may select any combat action the first round of combat". I assume there is still a seamanship contest? So if you selected "flee" you still might have to fight.

Thread: Merchants & Marauders:: Rules:: Has anyone house ruled the "win condition" to exclude stash?

I was thinking that it might be more interesting to have the win condition be 10 victory points on the board, and then have the stash count as a secret modifier. I felt like getting to 10 points with rumors and card sales and ship purchases wasn't actually terribly difficult, so part of me wonders if it might be worthwhile to take out the "surprise, the game you've been building up to is over because I was stashing gold!" element of the game?

This comes after I won a game last night in exactly this way. No one else had gotten to 5, and I got to 5 and won because the cards and rumors had gone my way to supply me extra gold. There really wasn't a chance to catch up to me. It felt like a bad win from a game play perspective.

Thread: Merchants & Marauders:: Rules:: NPC Hunt Movement

If a player pirate is in a sea zone adjacent to an NPC pirate hunter, the NPC pirate hunter goes after the player pirate. My question is does the NPC pirate hunter still need a flag of his nationality appearing on the event card to move (he simply ignores the direction, but most have the move command), or does he move even if his flag does not appear on the event card?

A few turns into our first game and we have a question about how far the NPC ships move at the end of the turn (and really even when drawing an event card):

After reading the rules at length we couldn't find a specific mention so we assumed MPC's move 3 Sea-Zones (as per player Captains)...but as more and more NPC ships entered the fray (especially Man-O'Wars), our player controlled ships we dropping like flies. At this point, we adopted a 1 space movement since 1-3 ships were being sunk each turn and no-one could gain any traction.

For the Event Cards, it seems to read that they only move one Sea-Zone so that further galvanized our adoption of the one Sea-Zone move for MPC's at the end of each turn.

We re-read the rules again and again and apparently we are glossing over this very important ruling here?

hi guys,
if a hostile npc enters the zone of a player captain will he scout for him immediately? the rules about npc scouting mention that it happens:
1)if a player moves into the sea zone of a hostile npc
2)the player starts his turn at sea in the same sea zone as a hostile npc

Thread: Merchants & Marauders:: Rules:: The word "reroll"

For the grappling hook on the player board it says, "Re-roll seamanship". The rules say that for this weapon, you can re-roll ANY NUMBER of dice. In other words the word "re-roll" on the playerboard implies "any number" even though not explicitly written. Does this mean that whenever I see the text "re-roll" in other areas by itself, I should assume it means "re-roll any number" of dice? Or is this just a special case?

The mission "Spanish letter of marque" says
Merchant Raid: Get a 3 gold bonus when defeating non-Spanish ships.

Does this bonus count for determining if I get glory (12 gold required)?
